Analog Craziness

I finally had some time last week to sit down with the analog synths Mike loaned me. Haven’t really produced anything musical yet, but I did make some crazy noise. My favorite synth of the two is the Roland SH-1. It’s the precursor of the more famous SH-09 (used by Goldfrapp on “Felt Mountain”) and the SH-101 (Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Portishead, etc.). I think the SH-1 is really fly because of its crazy modulation options. And the Moog produced Realistic MG-1 is pretty sweet as well — if a bit baffling to use due to strange labeling of knobs and switches. Below are some sound samples from both synths and my new Stylophone. Some sounds were process w/ my Alesis Bitrman and others w/ Steinberg’s free Karlette VST plugin.

Acquisition Week

Last week produced a bounty of new goods for the folks here at wildfreshness. First off, my generous employer gave me a working Tektronix Phaser 780 color laser printer. This thing is a behemoth, but in return for its excessive girth, it spits-out gorgeous color prints. I’ll certainly be putting it to use producing the packaging for my next mix CD. And from eBay I just received a retro toy organ called the Stylophone. This “musical instrument” was invented around 1967 in the UK by Brian Jarvis and can be heard on tracks ranging from “Space Oddity” (David Bowie) to “Mayfly” (Belle & Sebastian). My model was made in Hong Kong and imported by some company in Chicago, but it still has that trademark angry bee Stylophone sound associated w/ the British produced versions.
